APS Type 1.org helps fund research

APS Type 1.org contributed $50,000 this year to NORD to fund research grants for APS Type 1.

Some of the research that has been done with our grants includes Dr. Daniela Cihakova's interim report for her study entitled, Chronic Candidiasis Develops in the Absence of Normal AIRE Function Due To a Defect in the Induction of IL-17 by Dendritic Cells.  A small excerpt follows:

We have found that the decreased ability of APECED patients to fight specific yeast infections could be a result of ineffective TH17 cell responses that are necessary to cure such infections. Our results from AIRE KO mice, which are a model of APECED disease, suggest that multiple defects of dendritic cells contribute to insufficient TH17 response and chronic candida infections.
